The Office of the Provost's Diversity & Inclusion team invites submissions for the Views from UChicago Book Talk Series, an ongoing forum that highlights recently-published books by members of the University of Chicago community that engage with pressing social issues.
This series offers a platform to celebrate the scholarly contributions of the broader UChicago community and to foster campus-wide dialogue around timely, complex, and socially significant topics. By bringing academic work into public conversation, the series aims to showcase UChicago research that broadens our collective understanding of social issues, to promote discussion across disciplines and audiences, to strengthen connections between scholars in the broader UChicago community, and to demonstrate the impact of academic work beyond the University.

About the Series
Each event in the Views book talk series features:
- An author presenting their recently published book
- A discussant (selected by the author or in collaboration with the D&I team) engaging in conversation with the author
- An audience Q&A
Talks typically run 60 to 75 minutes and are free and open to all. We aim to host 3-5 talks per academic year featuring work from across disciplines. Copies of the books selected for the series will be purchased by the Office of the Provost and distributed to attendees as part of a free giveaway.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
To be considered, books must:
- Be authored by a member of the UChicago community (faculty, OAA, staff, students, or alumni)
- Have been published within the last five years (not forthcoming)
- Address social issues, broadly defined
We welcome submissions from any field, particularly those that represent innovative contributions to scholarly or public discourse; that advance practical or theoretical understanding of social issues; that introduce novel concepts, methods, or syntheses; or that apply existing ideas in new or impactful ways.
Preference will be given to books that are accessible to a broad audience and have potential to spark meaningful dialogue.
How to Submit
Submissions (including self-nominations) can be made year-round by completing the Book Talk Submission Form.
We have two formal review periods each year:
- Winter Review: Submit by January 15 for review in February
- Fall Review: Submit by August 15 for review in September
Proposals received after these deadlines will be considered in the next review cycle. All submissions are reviewed by the Office of the Provost team. Finalists may be invited for additional conversation or consultation as needed.
