Diversity Dialogues: Featuring Meeta Kumar and Khanh Nghiem

Apr. 16

12:00–1:00 pm
Zoom

Diversity Dialogues are designed to bring together individuals from the University to learn about and act upon issues related to diversity and inclusion. This session, titled Supporting Mental Health Needs of Diverse Students in Higher Education, will feature Dr. Meeta Kumar, a psychologist and the Director of Student Counseling at UChicago Student Wellness, and Dr. Khanh Nghiem, a psychologist and the Associate Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Outreach at UChicago Student Wellness.

Students in higher education face an array of mental health challenges. While stress is a reality for all students, national data suggests that students with marginalized identities have unique challenges and stressors. They are also less likely to seek and receive mental health help and treatment. The pandemic has brought these disparities to the forefront. This presentation will provide an overview of existing research, unpack various factors that affect student’s well-being and help-seeking behaviors, and offer suggestions for supporting students. Following the presentation, attendees will engage in small-group discussions.
