Free Expression on Campus

Apr. 27

12:45–2:00 pm
Zoom

Attend a discussion about how to build space for inclusive and productive campus discourse. Two entities at the University of Chicago—the Parrhesia Program for Public Discourse and the Democracy Curriculum initiative at the Chicago Center on Democracy—have organized a panel of higher education administrators to discuss their work to protect free expression and inclusion.

There has been much debate about the tensions between protecting free speech and creating an inclusive environment on university campuses. Much of this debate takes place in the news media, and doesn't always reflect the work that higher education administrators are doing to resolve these tensions. The panelists all have significant experience wrestling with questions of free expression as a matter of theory and in practice. They are:

  • Sean Decatur, President, Kenyon College
  • Michael Roth, President, Wesleyan University
  • Kimberly Goff-Crews, Secretary and VP for University Life, Yale University
  • Michele Rasmussen, Dean of Students, University of Chicago
  • Geoffrey Stone, Professor of Law and former Provost, University of Chicago
  • Moderator: Leila Brammer, Director, Parrhesia Program
