Drusilla Dunjee Houston was the first person to publish a history of Nubia in 1926, Wonderful Ethiopians of the Ancient Cushite Empire. This class offered by the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures will explore this important historical work and look at the reasons why has largely been ignored. It will look at the context in which the work was written, looking at other works such as Pauline Hopkins' early Afrofuturist novel Of One Blood and W. E. B. Du Bois, who Drusilla Dunjee Houston cites as the inspiration for the work. In addition to examining her published history, the class will also consider Volume II, which was not published in her lifetime and only appeared in 2007 in an edition by Peggy Brooks Betram. The purpose of this class is to show why Drusilla Dunjee Houston's work is important and still remains relevant to our understanding of Nubian history.
